Preventing Evaporator Coil Failure on SPA-platform XC90s

A lot of SPA (2016-on) XC90s suffer evaporator coil failures — usually showing up as weak cooling, leaks, and big repair bills because the whole dash has to come out to replace the coil. After digging into this, here’s what’s going on and how to protect your system:

The root problem:
The A/C system sometimes lets the evaporator get too cold. When that happens, the coil ices up into a block, airflow drops, and then when it thaws it stresses the aluminium fins and tubes. Repeat that freeze–thaw cycle and the evaporator eventually cracks and leaks.

Volvo’s fix:
There’s an inline resistor (Volvo part no. 32241228) that plugs into the evaporator temperature sensor circuit. It shifts the sensor reading so the compressor cuts out earlier and prevents icing. Volvo dealers fit this when people complain about A/C performance, but you can order it online and fit it yourself. It’s an easy job once the glovebox is out — just plug it inline with the sensor loom.

Why it matters:
• Without the resistor, you risk ice damage and premature coil failure.
• With the resistor, the system cycles properly and the evaporator is much less likely to crack.

Extra preventative care:
• Change the cabin filter regularly to keep airflow over the coil.
• Consider using an A/C evaporator cleaner (foam injected via the drain tube or cabin filter slot) to reduce corrosion and mold buildup. UK-available options include Lubegard Kool-It, Advanced Engineering RTU, and RectorSeal Clean-N-Safe.
• If your evaporator ever does fail, Mahle makes a quality replacement unit that’s a good alternative to Volvo OE.

Bottom line:
If you own a SPA-platform XC90 and haven’t had the resistor fitted, it’s cheap insurance against a £3–4k evaporator replacement. Combine it with regular filter changes and an occasional coil clean, and your A/C has a much better chance of lasting.
