I finally returned to Volvo ownership earlier this year (after a year of driving a borrowed BMW 1.6....eewwww) when I bought a UK forum members rather tatty V70R, it's a manual car in silver with the dark interior. Picked the car up from Marc's in Kettering on Sunday at lunch time and then drove it the 200 odd miles home again, aside from a little pull to the right the car drove great. Once home I decided I wanted to clean the interior up a little and also do something about the leather as it had a few marks and some wear, out came the leather kit I've owned for forever. Sadly in the hurry to get it cleaned up I forgot to take any before shots but here's a couple of after shots along with a lovely view of the battered steering wheel which needs replacing.

The to do list :-

Electric windows dont work
Rear wiper doesnt work
Slight pull to the right
blocked cat
Wheels BADLY need refurbing
Front and rear bumpers need re spraying, along with two splits to repair in the front bumper
Bonnet needs repainting to rectify stone chips
small patch of bubbled paint to re paint on front edge of rear wheel arch
Various bits of trim broken that need replacing/repairing.
Tailgate trim needs 'Fix' kit
Central locking on front doors intermitant
Front mudguard missing
Recirc needs re fitting
Boost guage needs moving(keeps wobbling and it's really annoying)
Headlights look very flat inside, will need replacing sooner or later.
Possible warped discs.
Handbrakes a little high.
Door straps are broken on both front doors.
Various small dents all over.

I know this looks like a rather extensive list and well to be fair it is, but a lot of this is cosmetic and I'm more than capable of repairing it myself, Marc thankfully gave me a shed load of spares to go with the car so hopefull I will be able to rectify some of the faults without having to spend any money. Plans at the moment intail repairing the esentials such as the windows, rear wiper, pull to the right, blocked cat and central locking and then the rest I will do as and when I have the funds availble. Not quite sure what to do about the wheels as they're really quite bad, the kerbing is simply shocking, I may just wait till I dont need it too much over summer and refurb them properly.

Here's a couple of pics that I took not longer after getting back but sadly before I cleaned it. After cleaning I polished off some of the black marks off the front bumper so it wont look as bad until I get time to fix it, I also removed the black strip from under the back window as it was starting to rust and was jutting out quite a bit on both ends. Also greased the rear door straps as they where making that lovely groaning noise that they do when they're dry.

Spent a good two hours on the car tonight trying to work out what was up with the windows, passenger front window was not quite shut and wouldn't move, took it all apart and couldn't find anything wrong with it. The motor works out of the car, the motor works in the car without the window attached, the window moves up and down ok, put the two together and ummm....nothing. I've managed to get the window shut by pushing it while pressing the button, when you press the button you can here the motor trying to move. After some playing with a couple of spare switchpacks (none of them where particularly good) I'm starting to think that either they all have the same fault or the fault lies elsewhere, the two passenger windows I can here trying to move, the two drivers side ones do nothing (other than the switch clicking when you press the drivers window).

Oh....Also acquired a replacement steering wheel that is a quantum leap better than the old one, I'll be trying to fit that tomorrow...hopefully.

Spent another couple of hours on the car today and actualy got a few jobs done, lol. Steering wheel is now replaced, the old one put up a valiant amount of resistance but sadly it wasn't a match for my hacksaw. I got the interior lights working again (only noticed they weren't working last night), thankfully it was nothing but a blown fuse. Drivers side front muflap has been replaced, it was missing before along with the rivets that hold it in place so the bottom of the wing could move around a little, I also noticed that none of the rivets in the wheel arches are the proper Volvo plastic ones, these will all have to be swapped out, my OCD wont allow them to stay, lol. I've removed the boost gauge, it wasn't to my taste and as it was only stuck on the dash top it was wobbling around looking cheap and boy racerish, haven't decided wether to just sell it on or keep it for checking boost issues later on. Also found today that one of the footwell lights (drivers side) was in the door pocket, upon fishing under the dash for the wiring I've found it but the positive has broken off the spade connector, have to re solder it when I get a minute. After some advice on ..Ahem...another volvo site (Volvospeed...sorry guys), I'm going to try putting twelve volts to each of the window motors to see if they're all working ok, if they are then it can only really be the drivers switch pack thats faulty...

Oh I'm now thinking that the flat headlights may just be something sprayed onto the glass, gonna attack it tomorrow with some thinners and see what happens..... BMW got sent back today as well.....good ridance!!!!

Checked the lights, if they've been sprayed then it's on the inside as there's nothing on the lenses. While waiting for some Uni stuff to render on the pc today I thought I'd nip out and swap the rear wiper mech for the spare one that was in the box of bits that came with the car...took me all of about ten seconds to remove the rear trim from the tailgate...here's why
http://forum.vccn.no/img-dump/2013/11/941.jpg (http://s375.photobucket.com/user/volvo850t5r/media/download3_zps70126240.jpg.html)

Yup, it was only held in place by two wood screws...WTF?..Seriously?... After getting over that shock I pulled the old mech out to confirm my suspicion that...yep...it was seized solid...
http://forum.vccn.no/img-dump/2013/11/942.jpg (http://s375.photobucket.com/user/volvo850t5r/media/download2_zpsdc6b65c1.jpg.html)

After dumping that one I went to get the replacement out of the spares box...Ahhh...crap..... its a front wiper mech not a rear... how did I not notice that sooner?.... Never the less I carried on, I've managed to free one of these off before....I then spent the next ten minutes with a very large lump hammer, some WD40 and various other tools removing the shaft from the brace. I eventually got it out and cleaned it up, greased it and re fitted it. Once back in the car it functioned....sort of, apparently it's been seized for a long time and it's basically worn the ridges off one of the brackets in the linkage so it works, but it doesn't always park where it should. I've removed the wiper for now as I dont want it flopping around at the back looking stupid. After that fiasco I fitted the tailgate repair kit that I had bought, it went on but it just didn't really fit as well as the last one I got, not sure if it was the new clips (they seemed a bit 'chunky') or if it was the brackets?.. either way it's better than the two bloody wood screws for the time being..

Oh I bid on a set of Pegs on Ebay the other day, came so close..missed em by a tenner....Doh...oh well, the crumy Comets will have to stay on for now.

Nice! Quite a list you have there, is that from before you started the ressurection? The few photos I've seen in your 960 thresd doesn't match up with that list of faults.

Keep it coming, loving it!

Cleaned the engine bay up a little today with some de-greaser, whoever sprayed that black oily crap all over everything wants shooting, everything you touch is covered in it. I found a lead off the drivers side front wiper mech, plugged it in and the bloody washers came on and started squirting water out of a busted valve in the system...Wonder why it was disconnected?...I'll post pics tomorrow...

Spent a couple of hours this afternoon doing a few jobs, rear wiper now works again, sadly though the wash part of the wash wipe doesnt work, I've checked the pump and there's no noise coming from it at all so as it's definatley getting 12 volts I'd say it's dead. Pulled the drivers side headlight out while I was near the pump and while I had it off I pulled the lens off to see why they looked dark, still no idea however there's a lot of the silver paint missing off the reflector and what is there is not in good condition. Even after a good clean inside and out the light looks no different to the other one, time for new headlights I think. Oh I also noticed (while I had the headlight apart) that it's had HID's at some point and it's melted the reflector a little.Had another bash at the widows today, still sod all, tried replacing the other widow switches just in case one had a short but it had no effect at all. I also tried swapping the breaker over in the fuse box for the one for the drivers seat, sadly that did sod all as well.
While I was playing with the relays in the fuse box I noticed that part of the fusebox looks a little melted, it's not hear any of the connections so it's not been caused by over heating electricals but it makes me wonder if there's something seriously wrong with the wiring in or around the fuse box?.

Re adjusted the door catches as well today as one of the doors wasn't shutting flush, not a big job but it all add's up I suppose.

Crap....

Just went outside for a mooch around the car (as you do) and noticed that when I re fitted the headlight the indicator wasn't sitting properly, dawned on me that the clips on the indicator need to slide into the headlight... Ok, remove indicator...Nope..its stuck....come on......Ahh....Fek....

Had a little care package arrive yesterday from a forum member with some various odd's and sod's I was missing, I manged to fit a couple of the bits but I had problem with installing the 3 disc cd changer cartridge. After trying several times I just couldn't persuade it to go in, upon closer inspection I found that something had been shoved inside it!, after a little wrestling I managed to pull out a rather large bag of plastic scented beads...( I presume that this was inserted by a small child). Sadly even once I'd removed said item the cdchanger still refuses to work, think it may have broken or bent something inside, this means I now have yet another job to add to the list....FFS...

Electric windows dont work (Various switchpacks tried with no success at all)

Both rear quarters need respraying
Boot outer grab handle needs re spraying
Bonnet needs repainting to rectify stone chips
small patch of bubbled paint to re paint on front edge of rear wheel arch
Various bits of trim broken that need replacing/repairing.

Had a good day today, as some of you may know my compressor died the other day, a friend gave me a new but broken compressor yesterday (One of the air fittings had snapped off), when I checked it was exactly the same make and model as my old one so after a morning of swapping some parts around I have a brand new compressor!..

After such a success this morning I decided to have a look at the cabin filter as I'd noticed yesterday that there wasn't exactly a lot of air being blown through the heater even on full. To say it was filthy would be the understatement of the year, I don't think this thing has been changed in years!..

http://forum.vccn.no/img-dump/2013/11/960.jpg (http://s375.photobucket.com/user/volvo850t5r/media/photo_zps57c03042.jpg.html)

I've left it off for now and the fan's much more usefull now, though I will have to order a replacement for it.

While I had the trim off under the windscreen I had a proper look at the fuse box to see if I could trace the window fault, sadly couldn't see anything wrong there. I then proceeded to remove the kick panel under the dash to examine the underside of the fusebox, still couldn't see anything wrong. I then decided that I'd checked everything else so I'd check the wiring multiplug on the door (as it was the only thing I hadn't checked)... This is what I found..

http://forum.vccn.no/img-dump/2013/11/961.jpg (http://s375.photobucket.com/user/volvo850t5r/media/photo_zps7833272d.jpg.html)

Don't know about you guys but to me that just doesnt look right. Upon closer inspection there was 6 wires that where obviously not making any sort of contact as they'd been pushed back into the plastic housing. I pulled a couple of the wires but there was no way of re inserting them and having them stay in place, as a temporary fix I've hot glues all the wires that where loose to the rest of the wires that are firmly seated. Lo and behold...I HAVE WORKING WINDOWS!!!!... BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.. Really made my day this did, the only minor problem I have now is that I'm now in the land of dubious switchpacks.. the one I have now is ok but it's not brilliant, time to start saving for a new one.

On a side note, who was it that offered me a replacement drivers door in Silver?...(this one has a big dent at the bottom..and the knackered multiplug)

Spent a couple of hours today getting another few jobs done, I didn't have long due to the weather but I decided to get something done during a break in the rain. I managed to get the rear blinds removed off the rear doors today, I had no need for them and didn't particularly like them so they're getting filed in the bin (unless someone wants them). I also noticed the other day that the front two tie down points were missing, it was only once I removed some of the boot floor that I realised they were not even bolted in. I forgot that Marc removed the rear brace when he sold me the car and that probably got in the way of the rear tie down points. Thankfully the previous owner had thrown them into one of the many spared boxes that he'd given me so they're now re attached.
The floor mats are currently doing a couple of laps in the washing machine, juydging by the amount of soap suds coming out of the powder draw I put too much washing up liquid in with them (oops..) After a good luck at them the mats have never been out the car as the carpet underneath is immaculate, that said the drivers mat has a hole in in so I could probably do with another.

I got excited today because I thought I'd found the cause of the central locking problem, I took the wiring multiplug off the passenger door and realised it too had about 6 wires missing....then I realised that as a PASSENGER door it wont have as much wiring going to it...

Decided to put the freshly painted wheel on the car today, as the back tyres are good and the fronts are shagged I thought I'd put the new one on the back and swap on of the backs to the front (still with me?), all went well until I got to the front wheel, all the bolts where stuck solid, after bashing them all with a large lump hammer to try and break their death grip I managed to undo thee (including the locking nut...which thankfully wasnt tight) the other two snapped...FFFFFFFFFF...etc.. Thankfully I managed to twist out the broken bits and fit new bolts. The wheel I removed has sadly a big dent in the back edge..this could be why it's got a slow leak (not sure as it's not a massive dent)... Not sure what to do now, is it worth repainting it or should I just get a replacement wheel?...

Well not done much this week...upto today, today I finally picked up the remaining plastic rivets for the bumper so tonight I've finally gotten around to removing the damn thing so I can repair it and repaint it (Sooo been wanting to do this since I got the car).

http://forum.vccn.no/img-dump/2013/11/970.jpg (http://s375.photobucket.com/user/volvo850t5r/media/photo_zpsf7fae09b.jpg.html)

A quick before shot showing some of the crap on the front of the bumper, apparently someone reversed into the front of it at some point, hence the big split in the front edge and the scuffed paint.

Took me about 15 minutes to remove the bumper as someone had used the wrong rivets to attach the wheel arch liners (metal ones are sooo ugly), once I finally got it off and stripped it down I found this on the back of one of the corners... (I knew it was full of filler anyway)

You can also see that the corner had split as at some point someones hit something really low and it stuffed all the bottom corner in.

Gawd I'm knackered, had a really busy day today. As I was up early I pulled the front bumper off and prepped it for paint, didn't take too long as I'd already done most of the groundwork last week. After about an hours work I managed to get it basecoated and laquered. Just as I was finished that my care package a forum member arrived, a replacement rad, intercooler, fan and aircon rad, also a replacement MAF, the rest of the day has been taken up with swapping bits over, had a major problem swapping the rad as the two mounting bolts that hold it in place got so far and then the captive nuts started to spin, I really struggled to get anything on them, finally managed to get the passenger side to snap off, the drivers side I had to break the radiator bracket off to give me enough room get at the captive nut. While the rad's where out I gave the chassis a clean up and then moved the horns, they now live under the N/s front wing. Not had chance to try it yet but it certainly sounds a lot healthier, just got to wait until tomorrow now to refit the front bumper as the paints still soft.

Bumper is now done and back on the car!!, I've still to get a new reg plate (old one looks scruffy). While getting stuff done yesterday I decided that as one of them wasnt working I was going to ditch the headlight wipers all together so I've pulled the motors, I've already made some blanks for the bumper so I'll try and get these painted today while I do the fibreglassing on the splitters. Car sounds really good now, lets hope it drives that way and that nothing falls off when I go out in it.

As the cars now running like it should I've started to get a few more costmetic jobs out the of the way. Managed to get the front bumper wiper blanks painted and then fitted today, these turned out ok. I've also given in and painted the front grill, I've never been a fan of the all silver grills on Volvo's, I wanted to remove the slash off the grill but couldn't get the damn clips on the back of it to move at all, so I've masked it up and just sprayed around it, scuffed up the plastic, wiped with pre paint and then painted with black etch primer and finally some satin black, looks a lot nicer and now I've also fitted the two grills Pete sent me (ta bud) the front actualy looks quite decent. Still got to make myself a front splitter as I've started it but I was too tired to finish the laminating last night, may get it done in a couple of weeks..

Front with bumper (now painted) and lower grills replaced..

Pic of bumper drying in the garage.I'm especially please with how this bumper turned out, being as it was split in at least three places and also stuffed in the bottom edge, the whole N/s corner was totaly out of shape. I just need to get the wheels sorted now and then the rest of the paintwork.

Looks like one of the previous owners used it for target practice, then decided to try and hide all the damadge by just blowing fresh paint over the nice shiny existing paint, hence large chunks of paint have just peeled off. There's nothing quite like good preperation is there?.

Because of all the problems of late I've had no time or inclination to do anything on the car. The rear bumper still needs painting and recently it's started to run a bit rough again and use plenty of fuel again, I'm thinking though that its probably the O2 sensor getting crapped up with all the oil blowing through the exhaust.

Hoping to try and get the handbrake sorted over the next few days as it's crap, have to leave the car in gear otherwise it rolls, not sure if it's a cable it needs or if its just shoes, I'll pull the rear discs when I get a minute and check.

The last few times I've had the car on a bit of a drive (ie. motorways), when I've come to slow down and change gear I've noticed that the first press of the clutch is really heavy, after that it's ok. any ideas?..

This is the result of the blowout (not sure it actualy was a blow out looking at it) I had coming off the motorway the other day.

Well a small job has turned into several larger jobs. I decided today to clean up the leather again, that took all of half an hour. While cleaning that I got really annoyed at the gearstick lock that's been fitted to the car at some point and decided that as I dont use it that had to go. To work out how it was bolted on I had to remove the rear part of the centre console, this was already in quite a state so I was pleased to be removing it so I could fix it up. Upon getting it out I realised that the bolts holding it in place must be in the tunnel...where the exhaust is (behind the bloody shielding), so sod that, I'll break the grinder out and chop it off. To facilitate that I removed the passenger seat, and the passenger carpet...to discover......a wet floor......FEK..... So now I have to repair the centre console, remove the stupid gearlock I wanted to remove in the first place and also I now have to replace the hea
ter matrix (thankfully I think I have a spare in the shed)....I did think the windscreen was misting up a little the other night when I put it on hot....

Keep your fingers crossed for me....I'm going in...

Tomcat
24/11/13, 22:20
Thankfully today's liitle trip into the land of "Fek it's borked" didn't cost me anything, I had antifreeze already in, I had a spare heater matrix and I had a spare day, all done...suprisingly no drama. The matrix took about an hour to replace at it came out very, very easily. I've also managed to remove the gearstick lock, wasnt too bad but the nuts used inside the car where some sort of wierd sort that had a revolving outer rim that made them impossible to remove - unless of course you have a grinder, this made very short work of them. The centre console has been repaired where I could but really it needs replacing, it's really rather tatty and also now has a nice 4 inch long slit down the passenger side where the gearstick lock used to live.

To be honest guys so far it doesnt owe me that much, granted some of the repairs have come via generous parts donations off forum members but on the whole it wasn't too bad mechanicaly to start off with. The brakes are ok (just ok), they're not brilliant but they work fine at normal road speeds, being as I dont plan on driving like a lunatic any time soon they'll be ok until I replace them next month. Did check today while it was jacked up and the fuel filter needs replacing too, it looks original...so very, very, rusty.

As far as it turning into a money pit.... I kinda knew what I was getting into and at the time it was all I could afford, if I had more money at the time then I too would have bought something different, probably another T5-R if I'm honest. I do like this car it's just that it's a long term project, which kinda suits me as I've always got something to do on it if I get bored.

Speaking of which, after all that drama I thought "Sod it" and whipped the cone filter off for a clean, it's been looking very grubby since I got the car but I hadnt gotten around to cleaning it. I gave it a good shot of K&N airfilter cleaner and left it to soak in for ten minutes, after which I rinsed it out (from the inside obviously), I was rather shocked by the crap that came out of it..

Here it is before cleaning:

http://forum.vccn.no/img-dump/2013/11/1245.jpg (http://s375.photobucket.com/user/volvo850t5r/media/5992a361-cd2c-413d-92ba-fa16fb854e85_zps9bff452a.jpg.html)

So much so I gave it another squirt with the cleaner and left it again, after another ten minutes and anther rinse..

Second rinse through...

It's now soaking for a third and final time, then I'll rinse it and let it dry over night before re oiling in the morning.... I dread re oiling because I know if I put too much on it just means death for the MAF..

Finally got around to finishing the front splitter I started making for my own car!, this is the first one I've ever made for myself.. Basically I'm lazy and if it wasn't something that was making me money then it didnt get done,lol.. This time however I want to get the front of the car looking good so as I already have the stuff in I may as well make one. Also making myself a pair of headlight eyebrows, think they really suit the V70, normally I would just buy a pair but I have no spare money at the minute so as I have the materials I may as well just make some,lol.. Here's hoping the turn out ok.

Had quite a busy day today, I decided to get a couple of jobs out of the way and things sort of snowballed. I started off removing the windscreen wiper arms to repaint them, they'd gotten quite badly stone chipped (how the hell does that happen anyway?), while they where off I noticed that for some strange reason one of the wipers was a lot smaller than it should be, this has now been replaced with a handy spare one I had lying around. I then decided to finally fit the replacement rear window washer pump I've had lying around for months, this went a lot smoother than I though it would and I now have a working rear wash wipe. I've removed the stickers for the gearstick lock as I hate having pointless stickers in the windows (also the windows are getting tinted at some point anyway). After all this I decided that the engine bay was looking very sorry for itself..

Before:
http://forum.vccn.no/img-dump/2013/11/1249.jpg (http://s375.photobucket.com/user/volvo850t5r/media/photo_zpscddc42a2.jpg.html)

As you can see the engine has lots of that orrible engine laquer on it (curse the guy/woman that invented that crap), took ages to scrape it all off, I then gave the head a bit of a clean up along with the fuel rail and a few other bits and pieces and I then decided to paint the cam cover and the inlet manifold.

After:
http://forum.vccn.no/img-dump/2013/11/1250.jpg (http://s375.photobucket.com/user/volvo850t5r/media/photo_zpsdc7e738a.jpg.html)

Not the best job I've ever done but certainly an improvement on what it was, to do much more I'm going to have to strip things down and I really wasnt in the mood for that today.

Once all this was complete I decided I would finally fit one of my own splitters to the front of the car, this is actualy the first one I've ever put on any of my cars, not out of not wanting to, purely because I'm a lazy bugger and couldn't be bothered making one before,lol.. I have a feeling that after repairing the bumper it's now a slightly different shape as it was a pig to fit and I'm not overly happy with how far back the front edge is, given more time I'd have hacked it up and remade it fit better.

Well being as I've finally found a little bit of time where I wont need the car for a couple of days I've decided to repaint the wheels, sadly it's not going to be a full on strip down refurb as I dont have time for that, just going to clean up and repaint the outer faces. Before I started on them they where badly kerbed, chipped, the top coat of powder coating was peeling off in large chunks due to it not bonding properly and they just looked a site. Spent most of yesterday cleaning up the two nearside wheels and then painting them. Got them back on the car today and now I'm on with the two offside wheels, they're currently in primer but I hope to get them done by the end of today. Here's a couple of photos of yesterdays wheels.

Ok, so the day has finally come.....Headlight day!!!!... Yes the long awaited second set of LED's came this morning. After repainting the other headlight, then fitting the LED's and wiring them in, refitting the plastic lenses, fitting new seals, new glass etc they where ready for fitting...

Had a few minor hiccups, namely that the inserts for the screws on the passenger headlight started to come out when I tighten up the bolts, that the headlight bulb on the same headlight was popped and I hand't noticed and that when I first switched them on the LED's were not working. Thankfully most of that was simple to fix, the LED's I'd just wired in the wrong way around (the wiring on the LED'd is crap to say the least), after reversing both sides they both work perfectly. Now looking forward to having better lights at night.. Just hope I dont blind anyone as I've not had the chance to check the alignment yet as it's still light out. Better bulbs will get fitted at some point, at the moment I'm just glad to have headlights that look and function better than the old ones.

Oh and as a side note.. I wasn't overly impressed with the way the indicator units fitted, they refused to line up with the mounting holes (even with the headlights left loose for wiggle room)..

Finally got time today to check the compression on the engine. I checked it cold and hot and there's very little difference, book says it should be between 11-13bar mine where all around 12, very little in them all maybe.2 of a bar something like that, but that could be just down to not cranking for the same amount of time on each one. Soooo it's gotta be either stem seals or the turbo. As I now have a rebuild kit for the turbo that's my next move, I'm off around the 21st for a week so that'll be when I attempt it.

As I had to take the sparkplug cover off today to do the compression test I finally decided to cut and polish the cover, looks loads better now..

Speaking of sparkplugs though I had a look at the colour of the plugs when I took them out for testing and they all look a little er...white/pale.. I thought they where supposed to be a nice browny colour?... Is it running weak?

Appologies for the pic being blurred, the sun was shining and I couldnt see the screen to see if it was in focus or not. You can sort of get the picture though?..

Car still smokes a little if it's left ticking over for very long, I now suspect the seals on the turbo. A couple of months back I bought a refurb kit for it but I'm going to have to wait until I have enough time take the car off the road for a while to get it done, it's losing oil but not a massive amount so I'll live with it for the time being.

As the car stands now it's livable but still needs a lot doing to make it a nice daily driver, I'm hoping to get most of the remaining jobs done on it in January, till then I'm just going to drive it as is.

New plans due shortly to make a custom rear bumper with built in deffuser, apologies if the original photo I used is of anyone's car on here, it was just a picture I had handy that was at roughly the right angle(photo was edited in photoshop). I'll be making three, one for myself without the side extensions and two others for other forums members in the UK.

How did you pry open the headlights before painting the bezels? I am guessing they were sealed? Did you put them in the oven to make the glue soften or did you just force them open?
The reason I'm asking is because I have a set of aftermarket headlights for one of my projects that I had planned to do some custom work on myself. :)

Love your V70 by the way, looking forward to see the progress on the rear bumper. :)

The original 850 headlights are held together with those steel clamps you can see around the edge of the lamp if you pop the hood, an nothing but a rubber lining to seal them.... works good, in my opinion. The aftermarkets are most likely glued, 10 minutes at 50 °C oughta do it.

Yup, the aftermarket ones I have are glued together. I was just not sure how much temperature I should dare to set the oven to, but 50ºC should be sufficient to soften the glue without damaging the housing I guess.
I will give that a try once I figure out what kind of LED's that will fit and look good in there. :)

This was kinda off topic, since they are not Volvo headlights, but the principle is the same and they look similar to Tomcat's aftermarket headlights. The part were he has LEDs I've got a single bulb spreader. :)

Wow not looked at this thread for a good while. Turbo was finally refurbished late last year, I bought a kit with new seals for it off Ebay, sadly when I tried to fit them I discovered that the shaft was too badly worn, in the end I gave it to a local turbo specialist who fitted a good second hand shaft, new seals and balanced it for me too. Car has run much better since but sadly still gives the odd puff of smoke if it's left idling for long in standing traffic. I can only conclude from this that its the valve stem seals that need doing next as the compression's on the engine are spot on.

Back in January..

Finally!!!!.. On Thursday I managed to get all my rear brakes replaced, new discs, pads, handbrake shoes, new fitting kit for the shoes, new handbrake cables. Took most of the morning as it was peeing down on and off (including hail at one point), I had to cut the old cables off with a grinder as they just wouldnt budge due to being completely worn through and siezed. Discs had seen much better days, they where badly scored and pitted, all nice and shiny and new now..

Forgot to take any after pics ( I know.. the best bit).. but here's some before pics..

Recently decided that I wanted to upgrade to 18" wheels, I fancied Pegs again but as the replicas aren't for sale any more and genuine ones are getting hard to get hold of I decided it was either the Odyssius rims or Nebulas, thankfully some fairly clean Nebulas turned up for sale quite cheap with tyres.

It's been a busy couple of weeks with the car recently, got a few jobs done and some tidying up. I'm still working on getting rid of the intermitant ABS light and also getting the handbrake to actualy work properly (even though it's almost all new parts). Last weekend I swapped out the rear ABS sensors as they where coming up as faulty/intermitant, this was a complete pig of a job as it requires the fuel tank to be moved out of the way to get the wires past it, I also replaced the short length of fuel pipe from the tank to the filter which had been bodged when I bought the car. The fuel pipe was relatively easy to swap out as it was just a push fit at both ends, the abs sensors where a bloody nightmare though as the actual sensors where seizes in on both hubs, nothing some brute force and ignorance with a hammer couldnt rectify though.

The old (Bodged) fuel pipe and battered ABS sensors

Tomcat

Well today is suspension swap day, rear nivo's are being swapped out in favour of Bilsteins and replacement springs. Started well already, managed to snap on of the bolts holding the top mounts in the captive nut, got around that managed to fit the replacement top mount. Moved onto the spring, bottom nut that holds the spring in place is just turning the whole bolt in the retainer, cant get anything in there to secure it, cant even weld it in place as I'd run out of welding wire previously and didnt realise.. Hmmph.... Thought about digging the grinder out and chopping the bottom retaining nut off, just checked though and the new retainers don't come with any nuts.. Think I should never have started this...

Well I won!.. I manged to get the otherside done fairly painlessly, then went back to the drivers side. No matter what I tried the spring retainer bolt wouldnt come undone. In the end I cut the spring to pieces with my grinder and then ground the back off the captive bolt so I could pull it through what was left. New stuff went back on without a hitch (though I did have to find new nuts for them as there was none supplied).

Yeah I was just going to weld it myself but I didn't realise that I'd run out of welding wire, and that also the welder itself had pack up lol.. At the moment it sits at roughly the same height it did before, maybe a little lower. I'm considering chopping a coil off each spring as the top couple of springs are flattened together anyway, it's weird as they're supposed to be about a 10mm drop from the R springs.

Thanks, yeah it was my father in law. he'd been really ill for a while now with late stage Parkinsons that had sadly progressed to dimentia. My wife was really upset by it as he died the day after he saw her.

On a positive note.. Mould is done, first one is out and will be getting cleaned up tomorrow.

Shit, sorry to hear that. Only thing close to any sort of comfort in those situations is that atleast its at an end. Dont get me wrong, but watching a person you know and love wither away and suffer is damn hard. My condolances to you and your girl, sincerely.

Violent eh?.. lol.. I think I actually like that. It'll not look as bad when the centre section is painted satin black, just looks a bit much at the minute with it all being the same colour. Gimme a shout when you're ready for a splitter bud. As for Swedespeed... have to pop over and have a look see :)

Yeah, theres atleast three guys with your splitter over there. Looks damn good in satin black too.

Thing about my Paypal, someone filed a complaint on my ebay, claiming I had bever shipped what they paid for... however, I've never sold anything on Ebay. Then, orders for Iphone accessories were suddently ordered and not paid for by my accoutn, and I'm the biggest anti iphone dude ever. All this made my paypal not wanting to take money out of my account.

You dont do bank transfers, do you?

Tomcat

Yeah paypal can be a pain when your account gets into difficulties, it's very hard and long winded to get it sorted out. I've no problems with a bank transfer if that's what you want to do.

Thanks, yeah I need to take some better pictures. There's a show next weekend, no doubt there'll be plenty of pics coming from that.

Your splitters are done and packaged, they should be going out either Tuesday or Wednesday next week.

So... Eight months later... Car had open heart surgery at the beginning of the year, a replacement engine was sourced that had just been rebuilt along with a replacement M59 gearbox as my old one had started to whine quite a bit.

New Motor in and being re wired.

Getting there.

Car ended up with engine, gearbox, driveshafts, front shocks and mounts, poly subframe bushes and adjustable drop links while it was apart. It also got a 3" downpipe with angled housing and sports cat but sadly these have had to be temporarily removed due to a manufacturing fault on the downpipe. Car now pulls like a train and has thankfully, finally stopped smoking. Shame it cost me the best part of £1600 to fix it.
